EDIT2: This piece is entered in the World of Fantasy Contest, hosted by :icondark-fantasy: Yay!

EDIT: This version is altered by my cousin in photoshop to get the frame and the colors are brightened some too, but I like it!.

This is a piece I did for my husband's niece's 8th birthday. She likes dolphins and mermaids of course! I swear this is my last mermaid piece for a while! I think my subconcious mind is telling me I am obsessed with mermaids while my concious mind tells me I'm really not. Not sure which on is right.
Maybe its just because it's easy to draw a person without legs...could be. :giggle:

8.5 " x 11" on smooth bristol
Color pencil and pastel pencils
About 9-10 hours work.

Sorry for the bad cropping job, it was the best pic I could get with my camera and I just couldn't get the edges straight enough to crop well on the computer....in real life the edges are straight, I promise.
EDIT: New scan uploaded, which equals nice clean edges...yay!! :boogie:

P.S. I hate drawing dolphins!! :shakefist:
Also, there are four dolphins in this, not three. Apparently my composition is not great and my husband thought that the fourth dolphin (the dorsal fin showing behind the mermaid's tail) was the other dolphin's (to the side of the mermaid) tail.

I give permission to the following clubs to display this piece:

Very nice! I like how you used the dolphins to "frame in" the mermaid's shape and movement. yeh, sometimes that can come across strangely to someone else, especially when the surrounding "shapes" are cut off by the edge of the frame. It works, though.
Nice color, and her hair is such fluffy fun!

I love this. The dolphins are so beautiful painted. The one closest to the mermaid does actually laugh=) You caught that special shine in his eye.
The mermaid is beautiful. She says with her eyes that she really enjoy being with the dolphins. And who wouldnt?=)

I would say you should keep on doing more dolphins and mermaids. You have a talent for painting oceans. Why not try paint undines?

Thanks so much for your lovely comment! I am glad you can see so much!
Thanks for the encouragement; I am sure more mermaids will pop in my gallery, not so sure on the dolphins though. Undines, huh? Perhaps my muse will bring one about someday.
By the way, It's not painted, it is all color pencil and pastel pencil
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!'s

The hair was one big experiment. It turned out way different than what I initially planned - but I like it...surprises can be good I guess! :giggle:

Thanks so much for your comments!
I am so thankful for the reference picture; that really decided the pose.
I actually messed around with pastel pencils for the background for the first time and it actually turned out decent (and saved my hand from the thousands of pencil strokes a colored pencil background would have required). Next time I will have to tackle a detailed background like the Princess and Scoundrel piece of yours!!

You're welcome!
I bow to your skill with colour - I can never seem to get it right at all. Hence my black and white sketches. *lol* I'll warn you about trying a background like The one I did, though: You will end up hating the reference picture for making you go through that. Trust me. I did. :giggle:

Thanks for the compliment! I am actually new to the color realm, just started seriously experimenting the last year or so. I really owe a lot to color pencil technique books. There is just alot of things that I never figured out on my own and they have helped me gain more insight as to what works. I have found that all color mediums work on the same basic concepts of layering and using complimentary colors to create depth. I never took any color medium classes, so I guess I just never learned that.
Now my next challenge will be watercolor...if I ever get around to purchasing any supplies *sigh*

And, I believe that you hated that reference in the end...I do just thinking about doing it! Eek!

Interesting... I'll have to look into some books, in that case. Maybe then it'll finally work for me, as well! :D Watercolours are beautiful, just very difficult to convince that they should do what you want them to... :giggle: But you should give 'em a try, I think you could get some really gorgeous results!
And yeah... stupid reference... although now that I'm finished we're pretty much friends again! :XD:

She is very beautiful - I love how you have done her arms and hands, they look better than the reference. Her expression is so cute and adding the scales on her next was the perfect touch!
